Toxic Plants

Below is a list of plants that have been reported to have systemic effects on animals. If you think that your dog is ill or may have ingested a toxic plant contact your dog’s vet, the local emergency vet, or the ASPCA 24-hour emergency hotline at 1.888.426.4435 (fees may apply).

Note: Symptoms are listed in alphabetical order, not the order in which they occur.

Plants are listed in alphabetical order by their common names. Because many plants are known by many names depending on region, I have made an effort to list all the common names, as a result, you may see the same plant on here multiple times.

Adam and Eve

Also known as: Arum, Bobbins, Cuckoo Plant, Lord and Ladies, Starch Root or Wake Robin

Look for: Burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue and lips, hypersalivation, oral irritation, difficulty swallowing, or vomiting.

 

African Wonder Tree

Look for: Colic, excessive thirst, depression of the central nervous system, difficulty breathing, fever, loss of appetite, loss of coordination, sweating, trembling and weakness. As your dog weakens, you may see bloody diarrhea, convulsions, and coma. Death will follow shortly after.

American Bittersweet

American Holly

Also known as: English Holly, European Holly, Inkberry, Oregon Holly and Winterberry.

Look for: Depression, diarrhea, and vomiting.

 

American Mandrake

Also known as: Indian Apple Root, Duck’s Foot, Hog Apple, Mayapple, Raccoonberry, Wild Lemon, or Umbrella Leaf

Look For: Dermal redness, diarrhea, lethargy, akin ulcers, panting, and vomiting.  In rare cases, your dog may slip into coma.

 

American Yew

Look for: Difficulty breathing, seizures, tremors vomiting, or sudden death from acute heart failure.

 

Andromeda Japonica

Look for: Cardiovascular collapse, coma, death, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation, low blood pressure,vomiting, and weakness.

Note: This plant is highly toxic

Apple

This plant is highly toxic and serious problems may occur if even a few leaves are ingested.

*This is a particularly lethal plant, ingestion of 1 -2 seeds can be fatal
